Things That Make Me Want to Vomit - Obama Edition
July 5th, 2008 by SocProf and tagged Barack Obama, Gender, Patriarchy, Presidential Election, Religious Fundamentalism, SexismI might as well let the great Arthur Silber explain:
"Obama will obviously screw every single person and constituency that has ever supported him, that supports him now or that will ever support him — and he will do so in an especially blatant, in-your-face manner — if he believes it will be to his political advantage. And he knows they’ll continue to support him anyway: "So what’re you gonna do, vote Republican? Come on! Come on, you’re not gonna vote Republican!" Still worse: I have no doubt at all that he sincerely believes all the religious crap he’s peddling. If that doesn’t worry you, especially after the Bush years of God and Glory America, I doubt that anything will make you question The Faith According to Barack.
Without forgetting my much more serious concerns , I think there might be a lot of entertainment to be found in this campaign. Who’s Obama going to screw next, and just how badly will he humiliate them? Maybe a new slogan, to replace the already exhausted hopey, changey thing: "Barack will fuck you over — and he’ll make you LOVE it!"
It definitely has possibilities.
Good stuff! Thanks, you jerk."
In case you think Arthur is exaggerating, here is a nugget from Obama’s religion speech:
"That’s what it will be when I’m President. I’ll establish a new Council for Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. The new name will reflect a new commitment. This Council will not just be another name on the White House organization chart – it will be a critical part of my administration."
Welcome to the Obama administration. Theocracy you can believe in.
Of course, all this comes on the heels of other betrayals, on FISA and, of course, on choice (because, of course, we, sweeties, have nowhere to go, so he can throw women under the bus and take their votes for granted… and by the way, this ends once and for all the Roe / SCOTUS argument).
And it’s only July. Of course, we, who did not drink the kool-aid told you that this is the real Obama, and we were called all sorts of names, including racists. At least, we were never bamboozled by the skillful con artist that is now the Democratic nominee.
And let’s be clear: Obama is not "moving to the center", he’s moving to the right.
He’s not pandering to the right and the evangelicals. The stuff he says now is what he truly believes. The pandering was during the primary when he was courting the creative class (all the while dogwhistling to the religious crowd and the right, for those of us paying attention, so, it’s not like there were no clues).
This was supposed to be the year where the progressive agenda would triumph.

I long ago gave up the idea that a real progressive will ever be president. I’m 55 and I haven’t had one since I began voting.
A niche progressive, sure. And Obama may be that, on foreign policy. But otherwise, he’s just another DLC guy who can best serve as a reminder of why the two-party system remains a sinkhole.

You’re right, Kevin. The problem is that I think a lot of people were fooled or fooled themselves into thinking he was something different and behaved way over the top as a result.
And actually, on social issues (especially religion), he’s more to the right than previous Dem candidates.
And what is really stunning is that I don’t see any benefits to be had from this: evangelicals and the religious rights are not going to vote for him anyway. And a lot of feminists, like me, are going to be majorly pissed off.
What has he gained with such a move?
